News News Katharine House launches Defeat the Peaks Challenge Now that we’re living in the age of lockdown, virtual challenges have become a very popular way to fundraise for charities, and today Katharine House Hospice launched their own new and exciting challenge: DefeatThePeaks. Throughout June, the hospice is asking local people to set themselves their own steps challenge based on the annual Three Peaks race, to help raise much needed funds for the hospice. Only there’s no need to run the distance (you can walk or jog) and there’s no need to make it a full marathon length either. The challenge can be set to suit personal fitness levels. This could be stepping out of the front door to walk up and down the local Cotswold hills for 22,000 steps, which is the equivalent of walking up and down Ben Nevis. Or walking another local beauty spot - the hillier the better - and aim for 70,000 steps over a few days. This would be the impressive equivalent of climbing up and down Snowdon, Scafell Pike AND Ben Nevis. Smaller hills and fewer steps are just as valid, including keeping the challenge indoors to walk up and down the stairs at home. Something to bear in mind: in a 12-hour shift a typical nurse walks an average 9,000 steps. Laura Horton, Partnerships and Philanthropy Manager at Katharine House Hospice said: “We’re so excited to offer this brand new and inclusive challenge. It’s as simple as deciding which peak you want to conquer and how quickly you want to do it. So many of our events - including our annual Midnight Walk - have had to be postponed or cancelled this summer. Katharine House has been really affected by this loss of income, so to have a new venture like DefeatThePeaks is tremendous and we really hope that our community will fully get behind it. This is a great way for families and work teams to come together and challenge themselves, to inspire each other to see how far they can get this June.” For more information and to sign up, go to our DefeatThePeaks page. The fundraising team at the hospice have also put together lots of ideas for how to tackle the DefeatThePeaks challenge. The Katharine House team look forward to seeing you at the summit.
