Information for Healthcare Professionals

National and local support for patients, carers and professionals supporting patients

  • Maggie’s Centres offering practical, emotional, and social support to anyone affected by cancer from diagnosis through to the end of life, or those in bereavement - nearest one located at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford.
  • Macmillan Cancer Support: resources for patients and carers.
  • Marie Curie: a national charity that offers nursing care during a terminal illness.
  • Lawrence Home Nursing: a charity that offers nursing care at the end of life, predominantly at night to those registered with Chipping Norton, Charlbury, Shipton-under-Wychwood, Hook Norton and Bloxham GP surgeries.
  • Shipston Home Nursing: a charity that provides nursing care for patients who are terminally ill and wish to remain at home in Shipston, Wellesbourne, Kineton and surrounding areas. 
  • Palliative Care for People with Learning Disabilities (PCPLD): the PCPLD Network brings together service providers, people with a learning disability and carers working for the benefit of individuals with learning disabilities who have palliative care needs. 

Bereavement

  • Katharine House bereavement support: we are taking referrals from family and friends following a bereavement.
  • SeeSaw offers support for children (up to the age of 18) before and/or after the death of a sibling or parent.
  • Bereavement Advice Centre: a national helpline and information service offering support and advice on what to do after death, including all the practical and legal issues and procedures that people may face.
  • The Samaritans: 24-hour confidential and emotional support helpline. Tel number 01295 270000 or visit the website.
  • Which? Later Life Care: free information about what to do when someone dies and coping with bereavement.

Specific support for professionals

  • Palliativedrugs.com was founded in 2000 to promote and disseminate information about the use of drugs in palliative care. It also seeks to develop a sense of community for members of the website. There is a bulletin board to stimulate questions and debate and to share experience with colleagues. It is necessary to register for access for which there are eligibility criteria.
  • Macmillan Cancer Support: be.Macmillan for health and social care professionals 

National bodies/strategy

  • Leadership Alliance for the Care of Dying People
  • National End of Life Care Intelligence Network: information and resources on gov.uk for health and social care professionals to improve the quality of services and reduce inequalities in care
  • The NHS and End of Life Care: a collection of resources, including what the NHS is doing to improve end of life care and how inequalities are being addressed.
  • Hospice UK: the national charity working for those experiencing dying, death and bereavement. They work for the benefit of people affected by death and dying, collaborating with hospice members and other partners who work in end of life care.
  • The Gold Standards Framework (GSF): GSF was originally developed in 2000 and is designed to optimise care in the community for all people nearing the end of life 
  • Dying Matters: raising awareness of dying, death and bereavement in the UK. Useful articles, links ideas and a national Dying Matters awareness week in May each year.
  • Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care: the website of the National Palliative and End of Life Care Partnership includes Ambitions for Palliative and End of Life Care, which provides a national drive for local action 2015-2020.
