Our flagship fundraising event, the sponsored Midnight Walk is back! It’s one of our highlights of the year and we need you to help us make it work.

Our 10-mile or six-mile sponsored NOT the Midnight Walk takes place on Saturday 17 July 2021 between 2pm and 9pm.

We are committed to the wellbeing of all of our supporters, staff, and volunteers, and want to ensure we can run a fun and safe event for you all.

We have a variety of volunteer roles from making decorations for our promotional displays to marshalling on the day. Read more below about the following opportunities.

  • Event set-up team ahead of the walk
  • Event team during the walk:

    • route marshals
    • water point stewards
    • drivers
    • front and back walkers
  • Event take-down the following day.

Friday 16 July

Event set-up team at Banbury Rugby Club

  • 12 noon–4pm

(min. 10 volunteers required)

Help us set up the start line venue by:

  • Loading/unloading van
  • Installing small marquees/gazebos
  • Setting up stalls
  • Putting up signage
  • Decorating venue. 

Saturday 17 July

Route set-up team

(min. 6 volunteers required)

Take a 3-mile section of the route and help us to put up the signage to guide participants around the course. Best completed in pairs - one driving a car and one putting out the signage on foot.

Event team at Banbury Rugby Club

  1. Rugby Club Stewards (min. 15 volunteers required per shift)
  • 1–9pm (shorter shifts available - tell us how long you can help for)

Help us to:

  • Co-host the self-service registration table
  • Co-host the water station
  • Co-host the t-shirt & water bottle selling stall
  • Act as a welcome marshal to direct participants to registration etc.
  • Line the route out of the Rugby club to wave and cheer as the participants leave on the walk
  • Co-host the marshal registration desk
  • Assist with the catering
  • Act as a welcome marshal to direct participants to finish line etc.
  • Hand out medals at finish line
  • Line the route out of the Rugby club to wave and cheer as the participants return on the walk and to help light the route
  • Co-host the marshal de-registration desk
  1. Catering assistant (4–9pm) (min. 2 volunteers required)

Help hand out glass or fizz (over 18s) and ice-creams (under 18s) to finishers.

Banbury town and surrounding footpaths

  1. Route marshals (min. 40 volunteers required)

1.30–9pm (exact timings are dependent on your marshal location). Please note that all marshals must register at the Rugby club 12 noon–1pm on Saturday 17 July.

Help us to:

  • Co-host a marshal point on route
  • Provide assistance to participants
  • Guide participants around the route
  1. Water point steward (4 volunteers required)

2.30–9pm (timings are dependent on your water point location). Please note that all water point stewards must register at the Rugby club 12 noon–1pm on Saturday 17 July.

Help us to:

  • Co-host water points on route
  • Provide assistance to participants
  • Guide participants around the route
  1. Route assistance driver (1 volunteer required)

Act as pickup driver for any participants who are struggling to complete the course. Your driving licence must be clean and allow you to drive a minibus. (We will ask you to download the LIFE360 app or similar to your phone for the duration of the walk so that we can track your position on the course.)

  1. Course manager driver (1 volunteer required)

Act as driver for the Course Manager - you will make multiple loops of Banbury during the day and evening. You will be driving the Katharine House Hospice car. Your driving licence must be clean. (We will ask you to download the LIFE360 app or similar to your phone for the duration of the walk so that we can track your position on the course.)

  1. Route de-rig and back walker on 10-mile walk (min. 3 volunteers required)

Act as back walker for the 10-mile route - supported by car in order to de-rig the route. (We will ask you to download the LIFE360 app or similar to your phone for the duration of the walk so that we can track your position on the course.)

  1. Front walker on 10-mile course/ Front walker on 6-mile course (min. 2 volunteers required)

Act as front walker for the 6 or 10 mile walk to ensure that participants follow the correct course. (We will ask you to download the LIFE360 app or similar to your phone for the duration of the walk so that we can track your position on the course.)

Sunday 18 July

Event de-rig at Banbury Rugby Club

(min. 10 volunteers required)

  • 10am–2pm

Help us clear up the start line venue by:

  • Loading/unloading van
  • Taking down small marquees/gazebos
  • Taking down stalls
  • Taking down signage and decorations

Please note that timings for all roles may be subject to slight change

COVID-19 safety

We will be following the latest government guidelines on outdoor events. Volunteers will be asked to assist us by adhering to and helping to implement any necessary Covid safety measures.
