Broughton Grange Open Garden

Broughton Grange is set overlooking a beautiful Oxfordshire valley. The Morrell family owned it for some 200 years until purchased by the present owners in 1992. Broughton Grange is set in over 400 acres of parkland, farmland and open meadow, with parkland planting that owes its origins to the Victorian era.

Over the last 25 years Broughton Grange and its gardens have been substantially transformed such that it is now recognised as one of the most significant private contemporary gardens in Britain.

Entry fee: 

• Adult entrance: £12. Book your tickets below or pay on the day. Ticket sales will close on Wednesday 17 July at midday; thereafter you will be able to pay for them on arrival at Broughton Grange.
• Children: Free.
• Guided tour of the garden with the head gardener: we have a limited number of tickets available for this tour, which starts at 6pm and lasts approximately 90 minutes. Cost: £20.

Parking: Available for cars close to the entrance to the gardens and is clearly signposted from Wykham Lane.  

Accessibility:  Terraces are accessible from side doors, but the garden is on a slope with steps and gravel paths.

Around the gardens and particularly in the main walled garden there are a number of different landscape surfaces, sets of steps and steep pathways. Regrettably, this makes some areas of the garden difficult to access with devices such as wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

Please remember that Broughton Grange is a private garden open to the public only on charitable open days.

Refreshments: Visitors may purchase light refreshments such as tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits with funds raised going to Katharine House Hospice.

Plant stall: Yes, available. Sales from stall go to Broughton Grange.

All sales are final. All tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable, unless the event is postponed or cancelled, in which case you are entitled to a refund. This refund is for the face value of the tickets only and tickets may need to be returned to us before a refund can be issued.

About Broughton Grange Gardens and Arboretum

With its impressive 25 acres of gardens and light woodland, visitors can enjoy all the beautiful grounds at Broughton Grange. The centrepiece is a large terraced walled garden created by Tom Stuart-Smith in 2001. Vision has been used to blend the gardens into the countryside.

The walled garden consists of three terraces that contrast the structure and form of topiary with wild, luxuriant herbaceous planting, while softly framing a beautiful rural backdrop.

On the upper terrace, there is a Mediterranean climate walled border containing warm coloured perennials. There is a small vegetable and fruit growing area, which consists of a central circular fruit cage containing mainly soft fruit, surrounded by espalier apples.

A formal stone water tank makes up the centre of the middle terrace, which combined with the surrounding planting, gives the effect of a damp meadow. 

In the middle garden, visitors can delight in the Fountain Garden, Rose Garden, Orchard, Paddock Walk and the Yew Terrace together with further sections.

In the Woodland Gardens there is the bamboo garden, situated next to the peat block garden and the Stumpery. It forms an attractive entrance to the lower part of the arboretum. Created using 50 tons of soil and a collection of old tree stumps mainly from Broughton Grange as well as a few from Blenheim Palace, it showcases a classic combination of hostas, ferns, hellebores and saxifrages surrounded by larger trees. 

Below the stumpery and woodland garden, the water meadow channels water from a naturally occurring underground spring, down through a series of pools towards an open water meadow. A wooden bridge at the lower end of the water meadow leads into a wildflower meadow through which a series of old drainage channels run.

At 80 acres, the arboretum at Broughton Grange is one of the largest such recent plantings in the UK. A total of around 2,000 specimens have been planted in the arboretum to date.
