This year, the theme for the Hospice UK awareness week is ‘we are hospice care’. What a great opportunity to celebrate and give a shout out to all our brilliant staff right across the hospice who make Katharine House so special.

Our team provides exceptional care to ensure patients and families are as comfortable as possible, every single day. So, this week we’re sharing stories from a few of our team to showcase some of the different roles and the wonderful people behind them.

As well as a week to thank our amazing team, we want to say thank you to our wonderful community. It costs more than £4.7m per year to run every element of Katharine House Hospice. This equates to £91,217 per week, £12,995 per day and £541 per hour. We wouldn’t be here without your generosity and support. And we wouldn’t be able to provide specialist care to people with life-limiting illnesses – completely free of charge. Thank you!

Meet Trace

Say hello to Trace – one of the Nursing Assistants in our hospice inpatient unit.

Trace has been working at Katharine House for nearly three decades! When asked to sum up her role in one sentence, Trace said: "I absolutely love my job and it’s a privilege to look after people at such a vulnerable time in their lives."

We wanted to know what makes Katharine House so special, what’s a typical day like and also a bit more about Trace when she’s not at work.

Meet Josh

One of the things that patients and family members often comment on is the delicious meals that are served at Katharine House and how much they matter to them. Step forward Josh!

As one of our Cooks, Josh is part of the team responsible for making sure patients eat so well. From joining the team as a weekend Catering Assistant 16 years ago, Josh found a passion for cooking and is still with us today.

Meet Hannah

You may recognise Hannah from photos of our Living Well sessions.

Hannah has been our Living Well Nurse Co-ordinator since joining the team back in December last year. Although, before training to become a nurse, she volunteered at the hospice during her student years.

We chatted with Hannah to find out more about her role in Living Well, why she thinks it’s "one of the nicest jobs in nursing" and her idea of a perfect day.

Meet Stuart

Stuart is one of our nurses in the Community Palliative Care Team. While our Inpatient Unit cares for people within the hospice, our Community Palliative Care Team visit people in their own homes, at hospital or in a care home setting.

Many people prefer to be in familiar surroundings in their final weeks of life, and our community team help make that possible.

Stuart told us a little about his role, what makes the hospice so special and the surprising thing that patients tell him they love about Katharine House.

Lisa told us: “I believe so strongly that people should be supported to live their best life and have their needs and wishes met so they can have the best death possible.”
